This black shade cloth is made from durable polyethylene with UV stabilizers for long outdoor life. As a 30% shade cloth, it reduces sunlight to help cool the soil, protect delicate crops, and prevent bolting in heat-sensitive plants like lettuce and spinach. Ideal as a 30 shade cloth for plants, it's perfect for vegetable gardens, greenhouses, and hot-climate landscapes.
Unlike woven fabric, this knitted black shade cloth resists tearing, frays less at the edges, and stays springy and stretchable. It's also easy to install—you can add brass grommets, sew pipe pockets, or double-stitch the edges.
This versatile material is also great for making a breathable shade sail to cool patios, greenhouses, or outdoor seating—offering comfort for both plants and people.
- UV stabilized, rot proof, this black polypropylene has a life of 5-7 years, more if stored out of the sun during periods of non-use.
- General field guidelines: for vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers, use 30% shade cloth in areas with very hot summers
- For lettuce, spinach and cole crops, use 47% in hot areas, 30% in northern or coastal climates.
- Use 50-60% for shade-loving plants.
- Shade cloth is also used over greenhouses in summer to reduce the need for expensive ventilation.
- Maximum shade density (80%) is often used over patios and skylights to cool people as well as plants.
- Great for winter pool covers.
