Angelica is a bold, aromatic herb with a long history of medicinal and culinary use. Angelica archangelica, a member of the carrot family, produces lush foliage in its first year and towers in its second with tall green-yellow flower umbels, making it a showstopper in both herb gardens and permaculture landscapes. Traditionally used in Western herbalism as a bitter aromatic and carminative, it’s valued for its fragrant leaves, stems, and roots.
This biennial thrives in moist, fertile soil and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It forms large rosettes initially and grows up to 3 feet tall during flowering in its second year. Seeds are short-lived and germinate best when stored cold and sown on the soil surface—do not cover, as they require light to sprout. Germination may be slow but leads to vigorous, dramatic plants once established.

Give angelica ample space—2 to 3 feet between plants—to reach its full potential. Its architectural presence and utility in herbal practice make it a favorite for growers focused on both aesthetics and tradition.
