Pleurisy Root, also known as Butterfly Weed, is a resilient herbaceous perennial native to the American prairies. This striking plant produces bright orange to yellow—sometimes nearly red—blooms on upright stems reaching up to 3 feet tall. It thrives in full sun and adapts well to garden soil or low-fertility conditions, making it ideal for naturalized plantings, prairie gardens, and pollinator habitats.
A favorite among Monarch butterflies, Pleurisy Root serves as both a nectar source and a vital host plant. Its low-maintenance nature allows it to cohabit easily with grasses and other native species, contributing to diverse and sustainable landscapes. Cold hardy to -20°F, it performs well in Zones 3 to 9.
Sow seeds in early spring when the soil is cold and moist, or provide 2 weeks of cold stratification before sowing. Tap-rooted plants are best direct seeded in the garden and thinned to allow space for mature growth.
